Jane Roberts was an
ordinary person with an
extraordinary destiny. In
every generation, there are
certain individuals who have
an impact on the world in a
way that is far more visible
than the lives of others.
Jane Roberts was one of
those individuals.
Ironically, in her case, it
was something quite
literally invisible that was
responsible for the
significant influence Jane
had on the world.

Long before the many
popular writings and schools
of thought that each human
creates reality unique to
what that person believes
and expects, there was Jane
Roberts and the Seth
material.....
In the 1960s, Jane Roberts
was a house-wife in New York
and did not believe in life
after death. Yet, it was she
who mysteriously became the
vehicle for a voice of a
personality from another
dimension. This is the true
life story and account of
medium Jane Roberts and
SETH, a "trance"
personality, who for more
than two decades spoke
(channeled) through Jane,
resulting in a vast body of
highly regarded written
information that continues
to influence the world
today. The channeled
material addresses the
concepts that we know today
as quantum physics.
Jane's life is a
captivating, powerful,
fascinating, moving and at
times tragic story covering
her tumultuous childhood to
her ironic death. It is one
of the love she shared with
her husband Robert, the
story of her inner struggle
as a medium, and the
challenges to maintain her
own individual objectivity
with the material that
flowed through her.
Jane Roberts and her artist
husband, Rob Butts, lived
quietly in Elmira, New York,
spending their days working,
writing , and painting.
Their beliefs were planted
firmly in everyday reality.
One night in 1963, Jane
Roberts sat working on a
poem when a startling
transformation overtook her.
She felt as if she had
separated from her body, and
her mind was suddenly
confronted with a rush of
information and ideas that
were completely unfamiliar
to her. When the sensation
passed, Roberts opened her
eyes and found that she had
unconsciously written down
an extensive document
entitled "The Nature Of
Personal Reality". For a
time that followed, Jane was
unable to make the
transformation happen again
so they used a Ouija board-
a board painted with an
alphabet on which a clear
disc was used to spell out
possible messages.
The Ouija board worked, and
soon Roberts found the
information coming into her
mind before the words
appeared on the board. So
they set the board aside,
and in a state of extreme
focus and detachment from
her surroundings, called a
light trance state, Jane
began dictating the material
to Rob, who wrote them down
in shorthand. In trance,
Jane identified her speaking
personality as Seth. Seth
eventually began to dictate
his material as books weekly
for the next two decades.
During their unique twenty
year association, Seth spoke
(channeled) through Jane on
a regular basis, dictating
the books without pause or
hesitation, while her
husband sat across from her
transcribing each session in
shorthand. The most famous
of those books, "Seth
Speaks", was originally
published in 1972. After
thirty years, "Seth Speaks"
and many of the other Seth
and Jane titles, continue to
be stocked in bookstores
throughout the world. To
date, Jane’s books have sold
more than 9 million copies
and have been translated
into 16 languages.
Testimony that speaks to the
importance of this material
is the fact that Yale
University now permanently
houses the Jane Roberts
Papers in its library. These
papers are the 2nd most
visited archive at Yale by
scientist, physicists,
parapsychologist, and
laymen.
Jane always wanted ,urged,
and encouraged Seth's
origin to be questioned and
examined- by herself, her
readers, her skeptics, and
scientists. For she felt
the act of examination
itself, the probing and
questioning the limits of
our consciousness, was the
entire point of Seth's
teachings.
After her death on
September 5, 1984, it was
estimated that Jane had
spent over 10,000 hours in
a trance state, resulting in
more than 1,800 transcribed
sessions and 37 published
books. She died when she was
55 years old and channeled
Seth for more than 25 years.
Robert Butts died on May 26,
2008.
Millions of
people are familiar with the
Seth material and the other
Seth books. Not many know
about the woman behind the
phenomenon. Only a handful
know the real story of her
life and the challenges she
and her husband endured.
That is the story we intend
to tell.
